St. Frances Cabrini Shrine in New York City is built on property purchased by Mother Cabrini in 1899
for Sacred Heart Villa. This was the second of the three properties purchased overlooking the Hudson river
by Mother Cabrini. The Shrine is in a quiet corner of upper Manhattan.
The shrine is open seven days a week and has become a busy center for pilgrimage and retreat groups.
Our main mission is hospitality. The warm welcome of all visitors to the shrine is the task of the entire
staff. This is expressed in a willingness to stop and talk about Cabrini to any who ask.
We welcome the young people from the playground looking for a clean bathroom, and show the video to
visiting pilgrims. The chapel is available to groups for days of prayers and retreats.
One of our goals is to make children welcomed to the shrine. The children are
given a special tour (with a clear and close explanation of the remains of St.
Cabrini). We offer holiday celebrations (a birthday party for Jesus, a surprise
Easter party and St. Cabrini's birthday is a birthday party for the children.
Another component of our mission is the welcome extended to immigrants who visit
the Shrine. Members of the Filipino community are very active at the Shrine, especially
in offering hospitality at the feast and other large events. During the summer
we host an Immigration Conference and we have a regularly scheduled Spanish Mass.
