Founded in 1890 by St. Frances X. Cabrini, St. Cabrini Home
provides long term and temporary care and related services to adolescents and their families through residential
and group home treatment programs. Adolescents come to St. Cabrini Home for a variety of reasons. The
parents of these youths are, for one reason or another, unable to care for them. Many of the youngsters
have been abused or neglected, and most have been in trouble at school or with the law. They are placed
at St. Cabrini by the courts, their local school districts, or local county departments of social services.
St. Cabrini Home residential program is located on a 615-acre campus in West Park (Ulster County),
New York. The campus program accommodates 80 boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 18, who live in
small-group cottages, receive a full range of counseling services, and attend their own school - the West
Park Union Free School. The average stay in the residential program is 6 to 12 months, after which many
youngsters move on to group home living, independent living, or care with relatives.
In addition to the residential treatment center, St. Cabrini Home also operates
15 group homes for some 120 youngsters. Group Homes serve children who can function
in a community setting, but need the support and structure of adult supervision.
These single-family homes are located in Dutchess, Putnam-Westchester, Orange
and Bronx counties. The Group Home program is administered through offices in
West Park and New York City. The Upstate Community Program oversees 8 group homes
in the Mid-Hudson Valley while the New York City office directs 7 group homes
in the Metropolitan Area. Each home is staffed by a house manager and full-time
child care workers who oversee 6 to 10 young people between the ages of 12 and
21. Group home residents attend local public schools or vocational training programs.
Counseling services are provided at each site by social workers and psychologists.
